Bird Shield® is made from two food grade ingredients used in everyday life. One is called the "active" that does the work, the other is referred to as the "inert" which enhances the efficacy of the finished final product. The active ingredient is methyl anthranilate, abbreviated to MA. The inert compounds are a patented blend of food grade, naturally produced substances approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as "Generally Recognized as Safe" (GRAS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a "Reduced Risk Pesticide for general use". ACTIVE INGREDIENT PROFILE
Natural methyl anthranilate (MA) is an extract of Concord grape juice. The company's founder Dr. Leonard Askham was the first to discover why birds do not eat Concord grapes. The taste they don't like is a single component in the juice, called methyl anthranilate (an-thran-i-late). We spread Concord grape jelly on our toast in the morning and use it to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch but birds will avoid it because of the methyl anthranilate (MA) that is present. Food companies use artificial MA in their candy and chewing gum to give them their grape flavor. Beverage companies have been adding it to the carbonated water and sugar in their soft drinks for the same reason for over 80 years. MA has been classified by the U.S. Department of Food and Drug Administration as a Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) chemical and because of this we can put it on the food crops we eat to safely keep the birds away.
MA works by irritating the trigeminal nerves, (the three main nerves in the bird's head), which are associated with taste, odor and sight. These nerves make the birds very sensitive to what they eat, smell and see. MA is very repulsive to birds. Generally the birds spit out anything that has been treated even at very low concentrations and avoid areas treated with a heavier spray.
INERT INGREDIENT PROFILE
Methyl anthranilate itself is a good bird repellent but needs a special blend of companion GRAS chemicals called "inerts" to make it work well. Without this special blend of chemicals MA is unusable as a commercial repellent because it decomposes rapidly in sunlight and high temperatures, is insoluble in water and is harmful to plants (phytotoxic). It took many years of laboratory and field research for the Bird Shield® formulation to be developed, tested and patented with this special blend of inert compounds to overcome these barriers.

Bird Shield® is the only Repellent with the successful culmination of many years of intensive research and development work that has resulted in a product that resists environmental degradation, can be mixed with water for easy application while not harming plants or birds when the directions for use on the label are followed.
