BIRD SHIELD® is a food-grade bird repellent developed with major university assistance. It has been used for years on agriculture crops including rice, apples, blueberries, cherries, corn, sunflowers, table grapes and other crops.
The active ingredient is Methyl Anthranilate, a constituent of Concord as well as other grapes. Methyl Anthranilate, or MA, has been used by the food and drug industry for more than forty years to flavor candy, sodas, gum and drugs. It is on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration's "Generally Recognized As Safe" (GRAS) list.
BIRD SHIELD® can be applied by air at the doe stage of development. The earlier BIRD SHIELD® is applied to the crop the more effective it will be.
THE OBJECTIVE IS TO PREVENT BIRD DAMAGE BEFORE
IT STARTS!
FIELD TRIALS
Fifteen wild rice fields near Sacramento, California, were used for this trial. Four of the fields were randomly chosen as untreated controls in order to compare the production of the11 Bird Shield repellent treated fields. One pint of BIRD SHIELD® per acre was applied with a fixed wing aircraft once at the beginning of the month long trial. A second application was cancelled when it was noted that all of the birds had vacated the fields. Mature plants were harvested from thing 10, 2 foot square plots in the interior of each field for a total of 150 samples. All of the plants were oven dried, the seed removed and weighed. The combined repellent treated fields produced approximately 59% more grains (2,000 lbs/acre) than the untreated field (1,200 lbs/acre).

Frequently Asked Questions
-
HOW DO I KNOW WHEN I CAN HARVEST THE CROP?
Generally the crop is ready to be harvested six to eight days after the last application, however, sunlight and temperature can effect BIRD SHIELD® 's longevity. BIRD SHIELD® has been found to last up to 21 days in wild rice because it is protected by crop foliage and cooled by the standing water.
-
CAN BIRD SHIELD® BE WASHED OFF?
BIRD SHIELD® is rain fast and is gradually broken down by sunlight and air movement.
-
HOW MUCH DO I USE?
The effective application rate for rice is 1 pint of BIRD SHIELD® per acre by air. See label for additional application instructions.
-
CAN BIRD SHIELD® BE APPLIED WITH OTHER AGRICULTURAL CHEMICALS?
BIRD SHIELD® may be mixed with EPA approved bacillus, insecticides and fungicides. Check for compatibility and refer to individual product labels prior to use. Do not add surfactants, stickers or spreaders to the BIRD SHIELD® tank mix.
-
WHAT ARE THE BEST CONDITIONS TO USE BIRD SHIELD® ?
BIRD SHIELD® works best when applied to crops early in the morning or in the late afternoon when temperatures are lowest and winds are calm. Extremely hard water that contains high amounts of iron and calcium can affect the tank solution so compatibility tests are suggested prior to tank mixing.
