BIRD SHIELD® is a food-grade bird repellent developed with major university assistance. It has been used for years on agriculture crops including table grapes, cherries, peaches, apricots, plums, apples, blueberries, sunflowers, corn, rice and other crops.
The active ingredient is Methyl Anthranilate, a constituent of Concord as well as other grapes. Methyl Anthranilate, or MA, has been used by the food and drug industry for more than forty years to flavor candy, sodas, gum and drugs. It is on the U.S. Food & Drug Administration's "Generally Recognized As Safe" (GRAS) list.
BIRD SHIELD® can be applied by air or ground when the crop begins to ripen or birds begin to feed on the crop. The earlier BIRD SHIELD® is applied to the crop the more effective it will be.
THE OBJECTIVE IS TO PREVENT BIRD DAMAGE BEFORE IT STARTS!
FIELD TRIALS
Ten commercial Sunflower fields near Forman, North Dakota were used for these trials. Four of the fields were left untreated. BIRD SHIELD® was applied twice with a fixed wing aircraft. Thirty days after the second application, twelve flowers were harvested from four 100' x 100' plots within the center of each field. Each flower was measured and weighed. All of the seed from the flowers were removed, dried and weighed again. Weight per head surface area was calculated, the data pooled, and results tabulated. Seed production in the untreated fields ranged from an average of 0.002 to 0.014 grams/square centimeter. Seed production in the treated fields ranged from 0.018 to 0.025 grams/square centimeter; over four times that of the untreated fields.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
HOW DO I KNOW WHEN I CAN HARVEST THE CROP?
Generally the crop is ready to be harvested six to eight days after the last application, however, sunlight and temperature can effect BIRD SHIELD®'s longevity.
-
CAN BIRD SHIELD® BE WASHED OFF?
BIRD SHIELD® is rain fast and is gradually broken down by sunlight and air movement.
-
HOW MUCH DO I USE?
The effective application rate for Sunflowers is 1 pint of BIRD SHIELD® with 5 gallons of water per acre applied by air. Re-apply every six to eight days if birds return to the crop. See label for specific application instructions.
-
CAN BIRD SHIELD® BE APPLIED WITH OTHER AGRICULTURAL CHEMICALS?
BIRD SHIELD® may be mixed with EPA approved bacillus, insecticides, herbicides and fungicides. Check for compatibility and refer to individual product labels prior to use. Do not add surfactants, stickers or spreaders to the BIRD SHIELD® tank mix.
-
HOW DO I USE BIRD SHIELD® ?
BIRD SHIELD® works best when applied to crops early in the morning or late in the afternoon when temperatures are lowest and winds are calm. Extremely hard water that contains high amounts of iron and calcium can affect the tank solution so compatibility tests are suggested prior to tank mixing.
